I’ve done a lot of detailed and/or technical posts recently, so here’s a short, quick one on an easy topic. A new report out by Nielsen (via Contentinople) tracks video viewing across TV, the Web and mobile devices. The long and short of it? We’re watching more video than ever. Even with new sources of entertainment, traditional TV viewership (time spent watching regular TV) rose four percent between May 2007 and May 2008. Web video is growing too. Nielsen has no stats from 2007, but in May 2008, the report says there were nearly 119 million unique online viewers who watched 7.5 billion video streams.
And here’s another nifty data point: time spent watching time-shifted TV increased 56% year over year. That changes a lot of business and technical models that have been in place for decades.
