Comcast has a press release out today proudly stating its promotion to third largest phone company in the nation. I posted a note two years ago when the company hit 2 million digital voice subscribers, and now that number has more than tripled to 6.47 million.

While cable has had tremendous success entering the residential phone market, it’s not the only growth area for the industry. In fact, as the growth rate for residential voice services begins to slow over the next several years, the growth rate for commercial services should start to speed up. I’ve heard rumblings that 2009 is likely to be the year when cable turns its focus to business voice services bundled with high-speed broadband. The SMB market is wide open, and with the right equipment, cable can put together a compelling low-cost offering. Good timing given the current recession.
