Here’s an interesting little tidbit. While trolling through Comcast’s VOD guide, I clicked on a category I’ve never noticed before called “The Cutting Edge”. That led me to a sub-menu with Sci-Fi, gaming, and anime choices, as well as a button labeled “Fancast”. Since Fancast is Comcast’s online portal for video, I was curious why it might show up in the on-demand guide. As it turns out, the VOD category is exactly what you might expect: video clips and a couple of oddball full-length shows that are also available on Fancast. Yes, you can now watch online video made from TV… on your TV.
All joking aside, the concept of converging the online and on-demand platforms is exactly what operators should be and are working toward. It’s also interesting to note that the move toward Web-like TV means going beyond just TV shows to video snippets in the two- to ten-minute range – something we haven’t seen much of on the living-room screen before.
