I’ve been hearing a lot about fiber-to-the-home activities internally at Motorola, so it didn’t come as a complete to surprise to me to read today about the popularity of FTTH technologies among proposals for Broadband Stimulus funds. Still, the percentage quoted did throw me back a bit. Geoff Burke of Calix, writing for GigaOM, says that of the proposals he’s seen, more than 90% have included plans to deploy fiber. And among FTTH proposals, GPON dominates.
Meanwhile, fiber or no, the FCC has become very visible in its efforts to push forward with a National Broadband Plan. Check out Broadband.gov for archived workshops featuring “the FCC and key constituents.” And the FCC is now on Twitter! If you have the time, there is plenty of information being made publicly available, and there are plenty of ways to voice your own opinions.
