Execs on Parade: VOD, Tablets, and IP

Several Motorola execs have been making the press rounds recently. Here’s a sampling from Senior Product Marketing Manager Jim Owens and VP of Business Development David Grubb.

ITVT posed the question – Can operators make it possible for subscribers to pause a linear channel, go to an interactive application, and then return to the linear channel and resume play?

Motorola’s Jim Owens:

The technology exists to implement this today, it’s a question of designing a solution and putting the business arrangements in place to support it.

The two most commonly cited options are using the buffer in the set-top DVR and utilizing the VOD infrastructure. In the set-top DVR model, the interactive application integrates with the DVR or EPG to pause the program while the user views the ad or application, then resumes the program from the DVR when the ad is over. Communications Daily (subscription required) asked several execs about meeting consumer demand for over-the-top video. Motorola’s David Grubb responded:

Larger-screen portable devices including tablets are acting as a stimulus for the industry to look at how best to get content to those kind of devices and what the right models are. We do see that the industry is at an inflection point. We’re entering the era of Internet TV. It’s not just a few new features or IP bolted on to the video platform, but it’s really kind of an equivalent change from when the industry went from analog to digital. We definitely see that we’re at the beginning of that shift, and certainly these tablet devices are certainly the poster children for the experience that the consumers will expect.
