As many of you know, Motorola Mobility is making strides in the area of transcoding that provide great benefits to service providers and their consumers. Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion of one format to another, typically when a target device does not support the format or has limited storage capacity that requires a smaller file size, or to convert incompatible data to a more modern format.
As you may have seen, the Home business recently announced that HBO Latin America selected Motorola Mobility’s technology for all MPEG-4 programming distribution. This will help HBO Latin America convert their existing network from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 to better optimize their bandwidth utilization and allow for increased delivery of high definition services.
HBO Latin America now boasts the most advanced digital delivery system ever deployed in the region, yet the solution remains economical for consumers because they worked closely with Motorola Mobility to develop efficient, cost-effective solutions.
Why is this important? What does this mean to the industry and general consumer across the world? When technology companies like Motorola can partner with service and content providers in this manner, it allows for greater efficiency across the network.
This results in more bandwidth to increase the number of HD services offered and positions them to offer 1080p HD and 3D TV programming when service providers are ready for it. Also, Motorola’s solutions allow simultaneously support legacy MPEG-2 HD and SD services without requiring additional satellite bandwidth, which offers service providers great flexibility to serve virtually all customers.
So, what do you think? What trends are you seeing in transcoding? What would you do with the additional bandwidth?
