This week, thousands of cable industry experts gathered in Las Vegas for the annual National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show. Content providers, media and even celebrities like Betty White and Teri Hatcher showed up at the conference to discuss the hottest trends in TV and what to expect in the future.
GigaOM’s Ryan Lawler shared that this year’s NAB Show focused heavily on multiplatform TV as viewers continue to watch TV on their second screens. According to a recent Viacom study featured in Multichannel News, tablet owners admitted to spending 15% of their TV viewing time on their tablets. Another hot trend at NAB was social TV with The Verge sharing Accenture research that one third of viewers in our country are using social media as a result of TV advertisements to learn more about the show or interact with the program.
We even made some noise of our own at the show with the launch of our DSR-6400 integrated satellite receiver transcoders featured in BTR. What was the most interesting thing you learned at the NAB Show?
1. Fear and loathing at NAB 2012 (April 18) By Ryan Lawler, GigaOM: I got the feeling that this year’s NAB Show wasn’t actually about broadcast TV, at least not in the way that it’s sold or distributed. It was instead about the multiplatform piece, and seemed specifically to shine a light on those who were leading the charge in that arena.
2. Tablets Are Clear Go-To Alternative To TV: Study (April 17) By Todd Spangler, Multichannel News: Tablets have quickly become the preferred second-screen alternative to TVs for viewing full-length episodes — ahead of computers — with tablet owners reporting that 15% of their TV show viewing happens on the devices, according to a new study commissioned by Viacom.
3. Social media adverts on TV more effective than we thought (April 17) By Aaron Souppouris, The Verge: A survey carried out by Accenture has found that one in three Americans has used social media as a result of TV advertisements.
4. Motorola Debuts Transcoder IRDs (April 18) By BTR Staff, Broadband Technology Report: Motorola Mobility is introducing the DSR-6400 family of integrated satellite receiver transcoders.
5. Whole-Home Solutions (April 18) By Staff, Connected World Magazine: It’s a fact that home security is no longer the sole domain of dedicated security companies. Other industries want a piece of the security pie, and TV and broadband providers are expanding quickly to take over the home.
