This week our own Bob Scheffler talked about how True TV Everywhere and network-based DVR are working together to power the ultimate multiscreen experience while also benefiting everyone in the ecosystem. In addition, popular tech blog, Boing Boing, highlighted Motorola’s DreamGallery in a post discussing the visionary software solutions of the leading cable box businesses in the U.S.

Also making news this week was a Television Bureau of Advertising study conducted by Knowledge Networks, which showed that consumers spend 5.2 hours in front of the TV each day, solidifying television’s dominance as the central entertainment and information hub for consumers. It’s clear that the use of consumer devices are infiltrating the home and changing the TV viewing experience. Building on this idea and adding the engagement factor is Lost Remote’sstory on CNN’s new Social TV strategy. CNN will offer viewers the ability to celebrate and engage with Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Where will the cable industry be in the next 60 years?

1.    Open Mic – Network DVR vs. TV Everywhere (June 5) By Bob Scheffler, CED Magazine: Since the advent of home entertainment technology – from the phonograph to radio to TV – the living room has long been the gathering place for the family. But in today’s world, the proliferation of smartphones and tablets has created an insatiable consumer appetite for anytime, anyplace content.

2.    Off the Grid, Still In the Box: where’s Cable TV headed? (June 4) By Rob Pegoraro, Boing Boing: Its “DreamGallery” interface (from a Swedish firm it acquired recently enough for the demo setup to price movie rentals in krona) fills its home screen with thumbnails for live, recorded and on-demand programs; the program guide hides beyond one button among many.

3.    Simplifying the Headend of the Future (June 6) By Monta Monaco Hernon, Broadband Technology Report: With a lot of talk in cable centering on moving various capabilities closer to the node or even the home, Gerard White, chief architect of network infrastructure at Motorola Mobility, asks if headends could be simplified instead by pushing some of the technology back into the network at a regional location — akin to a data center in the IT world.

4.    Study: Average adult watches 5.2 hours of TV daily (June 6) By Steve Donohue, FierceCable: The average adult watches 5.2 hours of TV each day, and spends 3 hours daily surfing the Internet, according to a study conducted by Knowledge Networks…”While alternative digital platforms have grown as well, television continues to dominate all other media in both time spent and consumer engagement,” TVB president Steve Lanzano said in a prepared statement.

5.    How CNN is leveraging social TV for the Queen’s Jubilee (June 3) Nate Edelsburg, Lost Remote: The Diamond Jubilee, marking Queen Elizabeth’s 60 year reign of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, is being celebrated and CNN has built an extensive social TV strategy to complement their broadcast from England. We spoke with Steve Krakauer CNN’s Senior Digital Producer.

Each year, The Cable Show offers the industry a chance to twist the knobs, pull the levers, and feast on innovations that will help manage cable’s most vexing problems. HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a new video coding standard that’s picking up steam and has the potential to make a significant impact on video streaming to multiple devices and the bandwidth requirements to handle the load.

Streaming video now consumes the lion’s share of bandwidth. In the US, over 37 billion videos were viewed in April alone. With the surge in the use of tablets, smartphones, and gaming devices, streaming video shows no signs of slowing.

The aim of HEVC is to reduce the bit rate requirement to half of that needed by today’s most efficient standard, AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10/H.264), to achieve similar visual quality. Why is this important? While some of the demand for higher bandwidth will be satisfied by improvements in current infrastructure and migration to newer higher bandwidth networking technologies, that alone will not be nearly sufficient. Therefore, a video compression technology with coding efficiency better than AVC is needed.

Motorola has been actively participating in the development of the HEVC standard by helping the committee to understand the needs of our customers and making technical contributions. We have also been developing plans to provide solutions to our customers in a timely fashion that will help them grow their business and lower their costs. We expect this standard to be adopted in a wide range of our products, from set-top boxes, to tablets and smartphones, and to the next generation of transcoding and other cloud-related products. It will support a wide array of services ranging from HDTV and Ultra High-Definition TV (UHDTV, aka 4kx2k) distribution, to streaming video, to 3DTV, to Internet TV, to TV on Demand, and more.

In February 2012, HEVC reached the milestone of the ISO/IEC committee draft.  It is expected to reach the milestones of Draft International Standard (DIS) in July 2012 and Final Draft International Standard (FDIS), ready to be ratified as standard in January 2013.

At The Cable Show, Motorola showcased the evolution of TV and a smart, simple connected home. In the video below, you can see our demonstration of HEVC video compression technologies  and learn more about how we’re rolling this innovation into our products. Surely we’ll hear more exciting developments about HEVC over the next year.

We’re back from the Cable Show and kicking things off this week with a BTTV video interview with our own Dr. Ajay Luthra. Luthra provided an overview on HEVC, noting that it is the next generation of compression standards that will help improve HD video quality across multiple screens. In addition, BooredatWork.com shared demo videos of our multi-screen software suite DreamGallery and the Motorola DCX3600. Furthermore, Daily Herald’s Anna Marie Kukec recognized our heritage of innovation that continues today with new advancements such as nDVR and DreamGallery. These products are driving the future of TV.

Now more than ever, mobile devices and tablets are controlling the living room. Big time TV networks, such as MTV, are even focusing its attention on the second-screen by increasing the viewer’s engagement with new social elements including live TV access on mobile devices. Finally, USA TODAY uncovered new research from Ooyala, which found that more consumers are doing something on their mobile device(s) while watching TV. The research also showed that tablet owners tend to watch more video in the morning. What time do you tune in to your second screen persona – morning, afternoon or evening?
