Converged Experiences

Steve McCaffery, vice president of Motorola Mobility in EMEA shares his views on converged media experiences:

“A 30 something year old man in IKEA and his partner was busy filling a shopping cart with assorted trinkets and nick naks for the home. He had his smartphone strapped into the child seat and was watching a live football game.

Leaving aside what that scenario does or does not say about the male interest in home furnishings, it does illustrate perfectly the reality of multi-screen broadcasting.

Long talked about, we are now in an era of true convergence of content and devices. This gentleman (presumably) had a mobile subscription for premium content and was able to watch content normally accessible only in the home, on a secondary device and in a location of his choosing.

At Motorola, we’re calling this new era one of Converged Media Experiences. People are accessing content on a range of devices at a time and location of their choosing. For service providers eager to capitalize on the opportunities this new era holds, the question has moved on from what will this new era look like to how can we take advantage of it.

Just as the attitudes of service providers have moved on so have the technological questions. Everyone is in broad agreement that to deliver to a multi-screen, location independent converged future, cloud-based management software has to be in place (such as Motorola’s Medios suite). Now, the debate is around what to do with that content. How should it be packaged and delivered? What format and what devices? What to charge and when to charge it.

Perhaps controversially, there’s too much demand for services overlaid on the television. Our recent Media Engagement Barometer research of more than 9,000 consumers worldwide shows that the main television set in the home is still the primary access device for video content, we don’t want to ‘clutter’ that experience.
The focus should be on augmenting the television experience using secondary and companion devices (such as smartphones and tablets). This could be offering access to premium content while doing the shopping but equally it could be allowing users to access additional content, chat with friends watching the same program or browse the next program choices without altering or changing what’s on the primary television set.

Aside from the technology, the issues of copyright around streaming content to devices other than the television set should also become an area of focus. Content owners are waking up to the fact that their intellectual property can be viewed on a broad range of devices and in many more situations than the home. Licensing deals will now be negotiated with multi-screen viewing in mind, and while the natural instinct is to assume rights holders will be looking for more money, it also presents an opportunity to deliver imaginative rights packages bespoke to certain devices and formats (Sky Sports offer such as service for the iPhone. Premium content available at a competitive price but it can only be viewed on the handset and not ported or streamed to other devices).

Overall, delivering the multi-screen vision is now about the mechanics rather than the design. The hardware and software is in place, consumer demand is growing – rapidly – and service providers and content owners are fully bought into the opportunities afforded by converged media experiences.

What’s needed are the innovative services that take advantage of new device capabilities while delivering value back into the industry.”

SecureMedia in the Motorola Xoom

January 17, 2011 : BY Motorola

As you’ve seen here , the Motorola Xoom tablet was announced last week at the annual CES show, but what you may not know is how security plays an important role in the device.

Unlike any other tablet available now, Motorola Xoom features an unparalleled security infrastructure based on the Encryptonite ONE™ DRM solution from SecureMedia (acquired last January by Motorola) to protect the consumption of premium, high value content. Motorola’s implementation of the Encryptonite ONE™ System includes factory-provisioned digital certificates that are embedded into the Xoom (as well as all Motorola Droid phones from November 2010) that provide an ironclad “root of trust” as well as true authentication of the device to ensure reliable device authorization.

SecureMedia has also integrated the Encryptonite ONE™ System with the open standard HLS specification for Adaptive Streaming (Apple IETF Draft Submission) which ensures top video quality and a consistent viewing experience when accessing content across various networks and variable bandwidths.

The combination of the advanced content protection provided by the SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE™ System and HLS Adaptive Streaming establishes the Xoom as a trusted platform, unlike any other tablet on the market today, for accessing high definition (720p) premium entertainment content from the Hollywood studios and leading content owners.

New Converged Experiences and 3DTV videos

January 11, 2011 : BY Motorola

In the mix of CES last week, I uncovered a few new Motorola Mobility videos of interest. Consumers want to access and exchange content via the Internet and mobile networks. This is influencing people’s expectations to take and consume their content any time and place and driving demand for more immersive, converged experiences. Check out the converged experiences video here:

In the second video, Motorola shows consumers watching and reacting to 3D TV in their homes and how enhancements to their set-tops help provide an enhanced 3D TV experience.

The Motorola XOOM is Here!

January 5, 2011 : BY Motorola

Approximately 350 media and analysts attended a Motorola Mobility press conference in Las Vegas today to hear CEO Sanjay Jha announce new devices that give consumers new ways to stay connected to their business and personal lives. The highly anticipated, Motorola XOOM, is the company’s first tablet device that will be added to the growing converged mobile portfolio.

So here are some quick specs on Motorola XOOM and what makes this device stand out:
• Motorola XOOM runs on the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system (the first version of Android developed specifically for tablets).
• It’s the first tablet to feature the latest Google Mobile innovations, including Google Maps 5.0 with 3D interaction with access to over 3 million Google eBooks and Google Talk with video and voice chat.
• The device has a dual-core 1 GHz processor and 1GB of DDR2 RAM that makes it twice as fast as any tablet on the market today.
• It also has a high-definition (1280×800) 10.1-inch widescreen display that is a perfect match for watching HD video in landscape mode and is narrow enough for comfortable two-handed on-screen typing in portrait mode.
• The XOOM also has a 2MP front-facing camera for video chats and runs on Verizon’s 3G network but is upgradeable to 4G LTE as Verizon rolls out 4G LTE service nationwide.
• For those that love to watch videos and play games, it includes Adobe Flash Player 10.1 which some tablets on the market today lack. A full list of specs can be found here.

Motorola XOOM is expected to go on sale later in Q1 2011 but no pricing is available yet.
